5 brilliant gaming Easter Eggs

Our favourite hidden treats... Share this Tweet + Submit Article To N4G Submit Article To Reddit Submit Article To del.icio.us Submit Article To Digg Submit Article To StumbleUpon Close Comments 12 By Sam White for computerandvideogames.com

It's nearly Easter! You know, the time where it's completely OK to gorge on crme eggs till your blood turns to chocolate, your eyes start secreting fondant filling and you keel over and collapse as a result of your euphoric chocolate eating frenzy.

Easter Eggs aren't just chocolaty treats though. In games, they take different shapes. They could be a hidden reference to another game, a different developer or something else entirely unexpected.

Gaming Easter Eggs gift you with a brief moment of discovery as you piece the connection together. A spark occurs, and your smile spreads from ear to ear. "I know what this means!" you cry inside your own little head, feeling like the cleverest person in the world, but not wanting to outwardly express your joy for fear of seeming odd. Then, just like that, you're back in the game, shooting stuff, driving cars or slashing monsters.

Here's a brief list of some of our favourite video game Easter Eggs to keep your curious brains ticking across the holiday weekend. Obviously, there's hundreds of classic video games crammed with Easter Eggs, but they're all well catalogued, so we've decided to pick a few from recent games.

We're sure you've got hundreds to share with us, too, so leave them in the comments below for your fellow readers...

DEAD SPACE

Warning: Spoilers ahead

Click to view larger image Dead Space mostly had us soiling our pants, but did you ever notice the connection between chapter names?

An observant eye would've noticed that the first letter of each chapter spells out a rather ominous message: NICOLEISDEAD.

Of course, had you noticed that then you would have spoiled the game for yourself. Nicole was protagonist Isaac's beloved girlfriend, who - for the majority of Dead Space - you were led to believe was alive. That is until the game did a psychedelic twisting flip on you and revealed your gorgeous sweetheart had been dead the whole time; she topped herself before the events of the game had even started. Gutted, right?!

Making the guards do handstands on the original Medal of Honour. You looked out of the window in the room where the guards were playing cards and looked at the two guards standing on the floor below. Pressing space made them do handstands....!!

all dem modern games. Dead Space yes, Fallout 3 yes, but the rest is a no.

They aren't spectacular enough easter eggs to be on the top 5. G-Man showing up in all levels of Half Life 2 etc etc now thats an easter egg

Ahh yes the amazing F3 Alien Gun. An absolute brute of the wastes. Thankfully the DLCs added much more ammo and guns.

But c'mon CVG how did you leave out Vice City's actual easter egg? Now that was a classic!

I wonder if the NICOLEISDEAD thing carries over to the game in other languages- obviously that text specifically might not work in foreign, and it might be that the equivalent words locally might not fit into the same number of letters, if the character is still called Nicole at all.

PAPADECEASED might work in France. It'd amuse some bilingual people working at Renault, anyway.

Rainbow 6 Vegas had one where you would shoot a coke can and an advert would appear on the screen above your head

Skyrim- Temba Wide-Arm in Ivarstead.

Beats any flavour of pick-axe for me :)

The top of the mountain with the pick axe isn't locked just hard to get to. Too much time on your hands and you can get there straight away going up the back of the mountain and around the blocks.

KOTOR is the best RPG ever and took me 80 hours to complete.

I want a HD remake of that game, as well as number 2 (which was ok) and then a full on third game.

Come on Bioware, you've finished ME3 (apart from DLC) now do KOTOR 3.

Probably never happen as they are now with EA.

Notch is the nickname of the guy who created Minecraft.
