EDMONTON - You can't hold a tournament if you don't know who the players are.

So the organizers of the 2012 IBAF Women's Baseball World Cup were understandably happy to announce Tuesday that the teams and schedule for the event have been finalized.

The international body has already named the eight teams that are going to be participating, said Ron Hayter, chairman of the organizing committee for the event, which runs from Aug. 10-19 in Edmonton. And also the schedule (was announced), so that makes it a lot easier for the public to know when the games are going to be and they can set up their own personal schedule.

Along with the Canadian national team, the event features teams from defending champion Japan, the United States, Australia, Venezuela, Cuba, The Netherlands and Chinese Taipei. The tournament features multiple games each day at John Fry Park and Telus Field.

The World Cup kicks off with four games Aug. 10, with Team Canada closing the day against Chinese Taipei on Telus Field at 8:30 p.m., following the opening ceremonies.

This year marks the first year the World Cup returns to Edmonton since the city hosted the inaugural event in 2004.

Hayter said the first tournament had its doubters but spectators were impressed with the skill level of the participants.

Womens baseball has really made big strides in the world, since then, he added. The competition was fierce in 2004 but the calibre and excitement of play has greatly advanced since that time. I can guarantee that, because I had the opportunity to witness the recent championship in Venezuela (in 2010). It was baseball at its best.
